WHAT IS THE
BATTLE OF THE BOOKS?
The Battle of the Books is a
countywide competition of young adults from all
participating Suffolk County public libraries.
Teams answer trivia questions based on eight
different books and score points for their team
with
each correct answer.
WHO CAN BE ON THE
BATTLE TEAM?
West Islip residents entering
grades 6-9 are qualified to try out for the
team.
WHEN IS THE
BATTLE?
Saturday, August 11th, 2012 (Exact times to be announced)
ALL
PARTICIPANTS MUST BE AVAILABLE ALL DAY ON
SATURDAY, AUGUST 11TH.
WHERE IS THE
BATTLE?
The Battle of the Books
will take place at Stony Brook University.
Participants and their families are responsible
for their
own transportation to and from event.
HOW CAN YOU
PARTICIPATE IN THE BATTLE?
The West Islip Public Library
will have 1 team (6 players on the team).
Beginning on June 1, 2012, stop by the Adult
Reference Desk of the library to pick up copies
of this year’s Battle books.
There will be an
informational “Kick-Off” meeting at
4:00 PM on
Friday, June 1, 2012.
If you are
unable to be at the Kick-Off meeting, you can
still participate…
just see Mrs. Fowler at the
Adult Reference Desk for details.
HOW WILL IT BE
DECIDED
WHO IS ON THE TEAM?
A written test will be given
on Friday, July 6th to decide who makes the
team. The test will have questions from
about all 8 books, but don’t worry if you have
not read all the titles by this date. Just
read as many of the books as you can. The top 6
scorers will become this year’s West Islip
Battle team. If for some reason you
are unable to be at the test on
July 6th, see
Mrs. Fowler and she will set up another testing
date for you if possible. Please note, if you do
not make the Battle team, you are still eligible
to be an assistant coach!
WHEN ARE THE
PRACTICE MEETINGS?
Practice meetings will be
held on
Tuesdays, July 10 – August 7 from 4:00 – 5:30 PM.
There will also
be a practice meeting on Friday, August 10 from
3:00 – 5:30 PM. Team members must make every
attempt to attend all practice sessions. Please
tell Mrs. Fowler if you are unable to make a
practice.
You ABSOLUTELY MUST be
able to attend the Battle
on Saturday
August 11th 2012 - NO exceptions.
